Music: Is it gender specific?

I recently met my friends, and the topic of a guy's music taste being gay came up, which made me wonder... Do songs have specific genders? Or are certain songs meant for a particular genders?

Music is an integral part of many people's lives. It’s a comforting space, to get away from the noise of our lives, or to party hard, or even simply to understand emotions through the song. Music can make some feel excited and overjoyed and make some feel tranquil and relaxed. Music allows us to feel emotions in our lives from the point of view of the artist, it connects to us in a deeper sense. So then is a particular gender to find comfort in a specific type of song or musical genre? Or are some genders only enjoy certain types of music?

When we glance at our playlist to choose a song to set up the mood or environment for the day when we wake up or when we are stressed, or even when it’s time for bed, we choose the song or skip it based on what we want to feel. Some people's music might be similar to ours but there are some whose musical taste is beyond our understanding.

Well, but does it even have something to do with our gender? Well certainly, the choice of music is subjective and we could say that the music we hear is part of who we are or simply a fraction of our identity.

But what about when a person is ridiculed for having a certain choice in music, a song, a musical genre, or even an artist, which doesn’t align with the “choices” of that gender? I have heard people receiving a lot of flack about what songs they hear but ridiculing them just makes them less of them, and then people tell each other to be themselves, how ironic!

Yes, certain music is preferred by certain genders more than the others but it doesn’t mean that the other gender should be ridiculed for hearing those songs, or to that artist, does it?

The idea of music being gender-specific just seems absurd to me. Society has bound us to believe that certain things belong to certain groups or communities of people, which we may not agree with. It becomes a sort of like forced identity which we, take upon ourselves, willingly or unwillingly.

Although, I’d love to know what you think and where you are coming from.
